Jeff Passan has updated his list of top 100 MLB trade deadline candidates. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has made his way over there, jumping from non-existent all the way up to 12.
Fans of Lindor, or at least those sensible enough to realize it’s probably not wise to trade him on a low, needn’t worry. The ranking is a bit arbitrary as it mixes talent, likelihood of getting traded, and other factors.
Passan claims there’s a 15% chance the Mets move Lindor by the August 3 trade deadline. Those odds might be even lower than realized as multiple Boston Red Sox players have a larger percentage attached to their name. They currently hold a 1.5 game lead for the third AL Wild Card spot.
Francisco Lindor’s spot at number 12 doesn’t make much sense
Passan’s note on Lindor comes to the same conclusion everyone seems to be: if Lindor does get moved, it’ll happen in the offseason. We can all agree this is a possibility even if that’s far from a sure thing.
Only the top 25 trade candidates have anything written about them with Clay Holmes being the other Mets player in the top fourth of the list. Passan gives him a 90% chance of getting dealt. The percentage attached seems a bit arbitrary considering the Mets and Holmes are reportedly both interested in an extension.
While Holmes could attract a variety of suitors, only four are listed for Lindor making that 15% seem even more outrageous. The New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves each get nods; neither of which we should expect to happen right now. The Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays are the other two clubs listed as a match for a Lindor trade. Those are reasonable options. There does appear to be a minimal market of teams who have the need, financial space, and ability to give the Mets something of value to make this a worthwhile endeavor. Just as every team should have targeted Juan Soto, only a small number are a match for Lindor even in a situation where maybe he’s putting up MVP numbers.
Lindor’s trade deadline entrance has been consistent with just about every reputable journalist saying not now, maybe later, who knows?
In addition to Lindor and Holmes, just about every other obvious Mets trade candidate got a mention with the only player getting overlooked within the top 100 being Tyrone Taylor. Luis Robert Jr. at 47 vs. A.J. Minter at 48 is also strange to see considering how hard it could be to trade the former with his injury reputation and high salary.
The MLB trade deadline floodgates have yet to open. Now under two weeks away, Lindor is only moving up on the updated list due to a lack of alternatives. Players will either get traded or the standings change. We know the Mets are selling, just don’t count on Lindor being a piece that moves.
