Last year, Samsung made the controversial move to ditch the S Pen on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, in the name of making it as thin and light as possible. So, could Samsung bring back S Pen support this year? Well, they could have, but they didn’t, and the excuse is basically the same.
In a roundtable with US media ahead of Unpacked, Moon Sung-hoon, an EVP at Samsung R&D, was asked about the S Pen on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. He told us that the decision to remove the S Pen again this year was made so the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could be as thin and light as possible.
But Moon did not close the door on the S Pen. He said that he and his team will be looking at customer feedback after these devices are in customers’ hands, and could potentially bring back the S Pen in the future, while maintaining a slim profile.

This seems like a priority that Samsung only really started emphasizing last year, as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 was still quite thick and heavy. But as far as foldables go, this is exactly what we want. We want something thin and light that can fit into our pocket, but still be used to get work done while on the go.
It’s hard to imagine that the S Pen will be coming back anytime soon. It sort of looks like Samsung is trying to get rid of it across the board, at least on its phones. But if enough customers ask for Samsung to bring it back, it could happen. After all, OPPO and Motorola have figured out how to make a stylus work on thin foldables – OPPO more than Motorola.
