The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a slightly different approach to their wide receiver position with the departure of A.J. Brown as they move into 2026. Rather than looking for a single player to replace his production level, the Eagles hope to rely on a greater depth of talent and some new faces.
The Eagles HC Nick Sirianni thinks the team is already well positioned to do just that as the team moves toward training camp. It’s clear that Sirianni is far more enthusiastic about the state of the receiver room than one would expect.
Nick Sirianni Sees Bigger Role for DeVonta Smith as Philadelphia Eagles Lean on Receiver Depth
Speaking before the Eagles wrapped up their offseason program, on July 22 Sirianni praised the depth of the Eagles revamped WR room while predicting an even larger workload for DeVonta Smith.
The Eagles HC called Smith one of the league’s most complete receivers and suggested the former Heisman Trophy winner is ready to handle the increased opportunities created by Brown’s departure.
“I think that I’m really excited about this receiver room. DeVonta Smith is just, he’s a special player that can continue to get even more targets…He’s so capable of doing even more, and he’s phenomenal, he is such a good football player.
Then ‘Tay Wicks has this great ability — gosh, there are so many similarities, and again, this is going to be a high praise statement and and I’m not saying he’s this guy, but gosh, he reminds me of Keenan Allen …..”
Smith has already proven he can thrive as a featured target. He has topped 1,000 receiving yards in three of his first five NFL seasons, however, Sirianni believes there is another level to unlock if his target share continues to rise in 2026.
Sirianni spent considerable time highlighting the rest of the room, beginning offseason acquisition with Dontayvion “Tay” Wicks. While stopping well short of comparing careers, the Eagles coach admitted Wicks’ route-running immediately reminded him of someone he knows extremely well from his coaching days with the Chargers.
Replacing Brown’s production won’t be easy. His impact stretched well beyond the stat sheet during four standout seasons in Philadelphia. Still, Sirianni doesn’t sound like a coach searching for one replacement.
