Netflix is about to release another creation from the mind of Ricky Gervais, in the form of an R-rated sitcom. The first new series Gervais has come up with in this classic TV comedy format for 15 years draws on his signature brand of cringe humor, as well as an all-star cast featuring several actors he’s worked with before.
Whereas the comedian’s previous Netflix originals have consisted of live-action dramatic releases and standup specials, this sitcom is an animated TV show, albeit one with adult themes and plenty of colorful language. Alley Cats follows a group of stray felines on various adventures, while they struggle with their own identities.
Like many of the best animated sitcoms, it blends zany, cartoon gags with an emotional heart. Since Gervais is the sole creative force behind the project, it also leans into cringeworthy social interactions, awkward pauses, and characters who tend to lack self-awareness, much like his landmark debut sitcom, The Office.
At the same time, Alley Cats bears a strong stylistic resemblance to the Garfield comic strips of decades gone by, especially when it comes to the show’s larger-than-life protagonist Gus, an orange tabby cat voiced by Gervais. It often feels like the comedian is applying his own nihilistic, foul-mouthed sense of humor to the preexisting fictional universe of Jim Davis.
Alley Cats Is Netflix's Latest Ricky Gervais Comedy
Alley Cats was announced Netflix’s new Ricky Gervais TV show last September, and is arriving on the streaming platform on August 7, 2026. The animated sitcom’s initial season consists of six 15-minute episodes, all written by Gervais and co-produced by animation studio Blink Industries.
It follows in the wake of its creator’s previous success with a Netflix original series, his dark comedy-drama Afterlife. Starring Gervais himself in its biggest voice role, Alley Cats also features an ensemble cast of big-name British comedy actors. Diane Morgan, who’s better known by her satirical alter ego Philomena Cunk, is the biggest among them.
Morgan worked with Gervais on Afterlife, too, as did Tom Basden, Kerry Godliman, David Earl, Jo Hartley, and Andrew Brooke. Motherland’s Natalie Cassidy and Game of Thrones actor Tony Way, who featured in Extras alongside Gervais, complete the cast list for this highly anticipated Netflix release.
If Alley Cats goes down well with viewers, we should expect to see more episodes commissioned by the streaming platform, perhaps for a longer-running second season. As it stands, this adult-oriented cartoon seems like an experimental passion project for Ricky Gervias, combining trademark comedic stylings with his love of animals.
This Animated Sitcom Feels Like The Office Crossed With Garfield
Having just released a 25th anniversary special about The Office, Gervais is back at the forefront of conversations about TV comedy. The work that launched his career has become an enormous influence on the genre, including his own follow-up projects. Indeed, Alley Cats taps into the tonal innovations of The Office as much as anything Gervais has ever created.
Seemingly inane conversations among a gang of street cats juxtapose profound personal identity and the meaning of life with farcical delusions of grandeur. Of course, given that this new sitcom is animated, it includes its fair share of cartoon slapstick, as well. Meanwhile, the characterization of overweight orange tabby cat Gus will feel distinctly familiar to fans of Garfield.
Even the way Gus sits on the abandoned couch in place the alley cats call home, slouched with his belly protruding in front of him, appears to be a direct homage to the legendary cartoon character created by Jim Davis. Garfield is far less cynical than Gus, and has a very different life situation, but there’s no denying their similarities.
