Barstool Sports founder and pizza reviewer Dave Portnoy has revived a five-year-old grudge against star football reporter and Celebrity Jeopardy! champion Mina Kimes, revealing that he believes she should be jailed for a retweet she made in 2021.
On July 21, Portnoy, 49, commented on ESPN laying off veteran reporter Karl Ravech when, unprompted, he brought up Kimes.
“Boo!!!! Karl Ravech is awesome! How does Mina Kimes have a job before Ravech? Mina Kimes is the worst of the worst of the worst!” he posted.
After a commenter replied calling Kimes one of “the best at the network,” Portnoy responded with pictures of his passages from his book, Cancel Me If You Can, where he devoted multiple paragraphs outlining his hatred of the popular analyst.
“I think [Kimes is] one of the great frauds and hypocrites of our generation,” the passage reads. “A true cancer to society. She’s earned herself a champagne bottle I can’t wait to pop open one day.”
The source of Portnoy’s extraordinary ire stems from Kimes retweeting a 2021 Business Insider article in which three women accused Portnoy of sexual assault and filming their encounters without their consent. Portnoy alleges that he DM’d Kimes to try and plead his innocence, but she blocked him on what was then known as Twitter.
Kimes also retweeted a second Business Insider piece in 2022 that contained more allegations against Portnoy. Portnoy was particularly mad that these retweets were made 10 minutes after the articles were published, which to him proved that Kimes did not read the articles very carefully.
To the irate pizza reviewer, these retweets were an offense punishable by jail time.
“Honestly, I think she should be in prison for this,” Portnoy wrote. “Somebody makes up a totally fabricated story calling you a rapist, and a well-known media personality is retweeting them and spreading these lies before she had time to read the actual articles. It’s insanity, and she should be held responsible for it.”
Portnoy has maintained that the encounters he had described in the Business Insider pieces were consensual. He filed a lawsuit against the publication in 2022, but the suit was dismissed by a judge.
Portnoy’s anger at Kimes did not win over many social media users. Several pointed out the irony of Portnoy demanding an industry peer be jailed for retweets in a book ostensibly about the “ills of cancel culture.”
As of July 22, Kimes has not responded to Portnoy’s posts.
Earlier this summer, Portnoy flirted with running for Mayor of New York City, despite hailing from Massachusetts. He was thoroughly mocked for his ambitions.
