If you're a neo-Western fan with a Netflix subscription, you might feel like you're missing out. Paramount+ has all the cool stuff, thanks to Taylor Sheridan. But don’t be too quick to jump ship. The world’s largest streamer has a few emerging shows that deserve to be in the same category as Yellowstone and its spin-offs.
Ransom Canyon is one of them, and Season 2 is only two days away. The series is based on the novel series of the same name by Jodi Thomas, who was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. It was created by April Blair, best known for creating the sports drama All American, and for writing episodes of Wednesday and Into the Badlands. Thanks to its source material and the great efforts of everyone involved, the show easily stands out from the crowd.
Forget Bullets, 'Ransom Canyon' is More About Cupid’s Arrow
Many of the greatest Western movies feature quick-drawing tough dudes in different factions. However, they're all unaccustomed to interacting outside their macho bubble. The outlaws enlist each other in elaborate plans to murder or plunder, then attempt to conceal their crime using their criminal know-how. Then the good guys catch or kill them. That’s cool. However, if you like watching characters falling in and out of love, there are great options on TV. And Ransom Canyon is undoubtedly among the most addictive.
Set in Texas Hill Country, the neo-Western series features several intriguing characters. Much of the plot centers on ranch owner Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel), who has his hands full, literally and figuratively. You’ll find him grabbing reins and gear, but he's also grieving his teenage son's mysterious death while attempting to fight off corporate land buyouts. He's also entangled with dancehall owner Quinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly), who draws him into a passionate romance. But love, like crime, is anything but simple.
There is a major problem since Quinn is also being eyed by Staten’s enemy, Davis Collins (Eoin Macken). As the two men battle it out, Minka Kelly, who displays an earthy appeal (especially in her cowboy hat), confidently radiates the character’s joy and torment, making us root for her all the way. Elsewhere, high school cheerleader Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene), the daughter of Sheriff Dan Brigman (Philip Winchester), builds a relationship with hard-working ranch hand Lucas Russell (Garrett Wareing). Beyond the core group, there are a few other characters who are time bombs waiting to go off as well as those whose darker impulses aren’t seen until it’s too late.
Series creator April Blair, who has always been a true original and one of the most influential creators in the television industry, can now take pride in putting her creative stamp on every genre that matters. An artistic chameleon who has never stuck to a single style, she defines the Western art form in her own way in Ransom Canyon, while ensuring it evolves from its gritty beginnings into something sweeter.
Like Season 1, 'Ransom Canyon' Season 2 Will Drop At Once
Here's some good news for binge-watchers. The entire second season of Ransom Canyon will drop on July 23, 2026, on Netflix. However, the new chapter will only feature eight episodes, which is two fewer than the previous one. It’s unclear if this is a creative decision or one linked to shrinking budgets, but whatever the reason, there’s no doubt it will be great. Much of the cast will also be back, except James Brolin, whose character, Cap Fuller… ummm… went through something that… ummm… Well! No spoilers. Steve Howey from Shameless has joined the cast, too.
Season 1 performed incredibly well. According to What’s On Netflix, it remained in the global Top 10 charts for four weeks, amassing 183 million hours viewed. Those numbers are incredible, especially considering that the show hasn’t reached peak popularity yet. Could it become a mega hit like Yellowstone and Landman? It’s possible. Netflix execs clearly hope so, and viewers will definitely be glad to watch more. April Blair is glad, too. She told the same website:

If the ratings remain high, the series could have multiple seasons and cement its place among the greatest Western TV shows of the 21st century. Jodi Thomas's Ransom Canyon book series is extensive, spanning 11 books, so there are plenty of stories to tell.
