Netflix has crowned a new king of streaming. After two weeks, the platform's hottest new Western series has officially dethroned one of the biggest shows of the summer, which had claimed top spot on the weekly charts for the past month. Starring Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald, Netflix's newest hit is a fresh take on an old tale that's struck a chord with people around the globe.
Netflix's New 8-Part Western Series Reigns Supreme
Released on July 9, Netflix's Little House on the Prairie is based on the classic novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The series was first brought to life in the '70s, with Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, and Melissa Sue Anderson playing the leads. It lasted up until 1983, and while this new version is not a beat-for-beat remake of the show, it does serve as a fresh interpretation of the source material.
Developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine, Little House on the Prairie was an immediate hit for Netflix, debuting on the weekly charts at #3 for the period of July 6–12. Since then, it's been a fixture on the daily charts, bouncing around the Top 5. That being said, the series now has the distinction of being Netflix's hottest new series, as it's finally knocked the smash hit, I Will Find You, down a peg.
For the week of July 13–19, Little House on the Prairie took the top spot on Netflix, sending the Harlan Coben adaptation down to second place. The wholesome Western drew in 6.9 million views for the latest reporting period, and clocked 65 million hours watched. By contrast, I Will Find You amassed 8.8 million views for a total of 48.5 million hours watched.
Scoring 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb, Little House on the Prairie also holds a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. "I'm delighted to say this reboot of the original pioneer tale maintains the tradition of keeping viewers on their toes," wrote critic Alison Rowat in her review, while Christoper Stevens added that it's "old-fashioned family entertainment." He's not wrong, as although Netflix's version might be a little more dramatic than the original series, it's certainly one of those shows that everyone can watch together.
When Does 'Little House on the Prairie' Season 2 Come Out?
Having predicted that their version of Little House on the Prairie would be a massive hit, the streaming giant already renewed it for a second season four months before it even premiered. The gamble has clearly paid off, as the Western has certainly become a beloved favorite in a very short amount of time. The question now becomes: when does Season 2 come out?
Sadly, the answer is not until next year. Filming on Little House on the Prairie Season 2 is currently underway in Canada, and isn't slated to wrap until October. While no official release date has been set just yet, viewers can most likely look for it to return to Netflix around this same time next year.
