More than 24 high-water rescues were conducted in the Uvalde area on Tuesday, July 14, according to a 3 p.m. update from the Uvalde Police Department.
The City of Uvalde has opened a temporary emergency shelter for residents affected by Tuesday morning's heavy rains and flash flooding. Officials said in a Facebook post at 1:09 p.m. that the Uvalde County Fairplex is now open to anyone displaced by the "life-threatening' rains, as ongoing inclement weather is expected to surge across the area once again later tonight.
"The shelter is available for individuals and families affected by the weather," the city said in a Facebook post. "If you or someone you know needs a safe location, please go to the Fairplex."
Pets are not allowed inside the facility at this time; however, anyone with a service animal should notify shelter staff upon arrival for accommodations.
As heavy rainstorms continue to take shape across the San Antonio area and the Texas Hill Country, the city is warning the public to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates.
"Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may need assistance," the post continues.
Online users in the area have shared warnings with other community members that the storms have left them displaced in the area.
Threads user YahIsrael_thechosen1 shared that they were stuck in roughly eight feet of water on Texas Highway 55 near Uvalde following Tuesday morning's downpours.
Unhoused advocate Roxann Gutierrez, who is currently staying at the city's temporary emergency shelter, says that displaced families with children and nearly a dozen unhoused people are staying there as conditions may worsen.
We can't leave town, but we're doing everything we can to help everybody here," Gutierrez said to MySA.
Gutierrez said that a small bus recently delivered families to the shelter. She says there will be a need for dry clothes, blankets and other essentials.
