There were initial rumors that suggested LeBron James was going to make his free agency decision on Monday, July 20, almost immediately after the World Cup Final. However, that speculation proved to be false, as the 41-year-old forward has yet to announce his decision. Now, rumors have re-sparked thanks to an NBA insider’s latest claims.
During a segment on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin stated that James will not be announcing his decision on Tuesday, July 21. McMenamin also revealed that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been pushing the four-time MVP to make a decision soon. However, it sounds like James is in no rush.
“I’ve been told by a source ‘nothing happening today,'” McMenamin said. “People around the league, including commissioner Adam Silver, are trying to put pressure on the James’ camp to make a decision.”

“McMenamin also added that James is still ‘weighing options’ and there ‘isn’t an elaborate rollout plan’ for when James announces,” ESPN wrote in a column.
LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul also claimed that the 23-year veteran still does not know which team to play for next season, per McMenamin. If that is the case, NBA fans could be in for a long offseason waiting for James’ announcement. Much like Aaron Rodgers dragged his decision to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the past.
“Rich Paul says that there will be NO LeBron James news today and that LeBron doesn’t know what he’s going to do, per Dave McMenamin,” said ClutchPoints in a post on X.
Rumors have pegged five teams as the likely landing spots for the 22-time All-Star. Those organizations include the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Other franchises have been linked to James as well, but none of them seem to truly be in the mix for James.
The four-time NBA champion is coming off a 2025-26 campaign where he played second fiddle to Luka Doncic with the Los Angeles Lakers. James ended last season averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 51.5% from the field and 31.7% from three-point range.
