LeBron James may be the most lucrative free agent target this year, but he’s not the only star-caliber athlete who remains unsigned right now. Among the most interesting potential targets is veteran shooting guard Bradley Beal, who declined his $5.6 million player option with the Clippers.
While the market is understandably low for Beal (who played just six games last season), he makes an intriguing low-cost option for teams that lack financial flexibility. As it stands, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, at least two franchises are showing interest in Beal: the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, who are both expected to be competitive in 2026-27.
Other than James, many NBA free agents still remain on the board, including James Harden, Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson, Russell Westbrook, Draymond Green, and Jonathan Kuminga (among others). But under the NBA’s new CBA, penalties are tough for teams that overspend, making frugality the new strat for team building. Where Bradley Beal fits into this new reality remains to be seen, but his future is anything but certain right now.
Beal, 33, was once considered one of the best scorers in the league. In his prime (2020-21), he averaged 31.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game on 48.5% shooting and 34.9% shooting from three. He spent 11 years with the Wizards before joining the Suns in 2023. Ever since, it’s been downhill for the three-time All-Star, who has played just 112 games over the past three seasons. In 2025-26, he had his worst season yet, averaging 8.2 points, 0.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 0.5 steals per game on 37.5% shooting and 36.8% shooting from three.
It’s unclear whether Beal will ever regain his All-Star form, but teams might be willing to take a chance if he’s open to signing for the minimum (or close to it). Out of all 30 teams, the Heat arguably make the most sense for Beal given their current situation. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the team lacks depth at multiple positions, and Beal could fill that vacancy in the backcourt. Even if he’s just good for the occasional three, the floor spacing would be critical for a team that just lost so much shooting. Of course, the Heat won’t take action until LeBron makes a decision, but his arrival would only give them more incentive to make a win-now move.
In Boston, Beal wouldn’t have nearly the same level of clarity, but the Celtics’ mature and prestigious environment might be the right conditions for him to thrive. Without Jaylen Brown, critics are down on the Cs, but the combined talents of Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Paul George, and Bradley Beal might be enough to make some noise. At the very least, it should keep them competitive against other top contenders.
Ultimately, with so much at stake, teams are going to think twice before signing Beal. At 33, he’s already showing signs of decline, and this summer could very well be his last chance to land a contract. For his sake, this next move must be the right one, but his options are limited after several years of subpar play.
