Carolina Panthers nose tackle Bobby Brown III is facing a pivotal training camp and is in danger of losing his starting job. He had an up-and-down first season in Carolina, offering little as a pass rusher but helping the run defense improve from worst in 2024 to 20th in 2025. Brown totaled 31 tackles, three tackles for loss, one quarterback hit, and a half sack across 17 regular-season games, five starts, while averaging 33% of defensive snaps, along with three tackles in the Wild Card Round. He also posted five pressures (second-worst), a 2% pass-rush win rate (worst), 12 run stops, and a 6% stop rate.
Bobby Brown III will compete against second-round pick Lee Hunter for the starting nose tackle job. Hunter is an excellent run defender and a solid pass rusher. Unfortunately, Brown suffered a recent setback that could sway the competition in another direction.
The Carolina Panthers place a $21 million nose tackle on the NFI list
According to Jared Feinberg, the Panthers are placing Bobby Brown III on the active/NFI list with a hamstring injury he suffered during a workout. As Dan Morgan said during Wednesday’s press conference, the team hopes to have the $21 million nose tackle back sooner rather than later, as reported by Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire. Brown can return to practice and be activated from the NFI list at any time once he passes a physical.
He isn’t the only DT sidelined
In addition, the Panthers placedTershawn “Turk” Wharton on the active/PUP list ahead of training camp. The $45 million defensive tackle underwent a neck procedure in May and will be out indefinitely. Wharton is expected to miss time this season, but the injury is not believed to be season-ending. He will likely revert to the reserve/PUP list during roster cuts and will miss at least the first four games, maybe more.
