Contenders across MLB will be looking for starting pitching help come trade deadline. Names like Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants and Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets have already been deemed clear candidates to be dealt.
But now, Foster Griffin of the Washington Nationals has joined the mix. While the team is still deciding if they’ll actually trade Griffin, the Nationals may not have a choice if they receive a strong offer, via Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of the Athletic.
“Some rival executives believe a Foster Griffin trade is inevitable,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote. “The Washington Nationals, however, are still assessing whether to deal, extend or keep the starting pitcher through the end of the season, according to people familiar with the club’s thinking who were granted anonymity to speak freely.”

“If the Nationals end up engaging with other teams on Griffin, the expectation is that there would be strong interest in the left-hander,” they concluded.
After a three-year stint in NPB, Washington brought Griffin back stateside with a one-year deal over the offseason. The fact he is an impending free agent only increases his chances of being dealt. While the Nationals could theoretically sign him to an extension instead, trading him away ensures they get something in return rather than him walking away in free agency for nothing.
It’s clear to see why the left-hander is drawing so much interest, seeing as he was named an All-Star in his Nats debut. Over his first 20 starts, Griffin holds a 2.68 ERA and a 111/27 K/BB ratio.
Washington must finalize their deadline plans. But they shouldn’t be shocked if they phone keeps ringing with Griffin requests.
