The San Diego Padres are struggling this summer, after a solid start to the 2026 Major League Baseball season. Ahead of the league’s trade deadline, there are a lot of rumors surrounding Padres closer Mason Miller. ESPN reporter Jeff Passan is adding to those rumors by telling Pat McAfee that San Diego is definitely shopping Miller.

The insider says San Diego is looking for one specific thing in return.

Mason Miller is definitely available.. The Padres need major league ready starting pitching,” Passan said on the Pat McAfee Show.

The Padres were leading the National League West at one point this season. San Diego has struggled mightily the last few months, despite Miller’s dominance on the hill. The Padres closer has 25 saves, and a 0.89 ERA.

Despite those stats, San Diego is under .500. The team’s rotation has been roughed up in recent weeks, and the club is simply struggling to score runs.

The Padres are now just 49-51 on the season. San Diego is expected to get plenty of interest from other teams for Miller. That includes the Pittsburgh Pirates, who need bullpen help desperately.

A Yahoo Sports report also lists the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers as possible landing spots.

Miller has tried to keep himself focused on baseball, while these rumors swirl. He knows that his San Diego team is just one hot-streak way from being right back in the mix for a postseason berth.

“It’s competitive; it’s all about getting hot at the right time,” Miller said per MLB.com, earlier in July. “I think you’ll see a lot of teams probably adding and going for it, because anything can happen any given year. You’ve just got to get in.”

MLB’s trade deadline is on August 3. On Tuesday, the Padres take on the Atlanta Braves.
