As rumors surround the Los Angeles Angels heading into the trade deadline on August 3, this MLB insider paints a picture of how they can get back more pieces than what a trade for Tarik Skubal would look like. While the Angels look to be a legit franchise, taking a step back could be necessary, with even Bob Nightengale encouraging it.
Speaking on “Foul Territory,” Nightengale was asked about what Los Angeles could do in the offseason, as names like pitchers Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano could be options. Nightengale would emphasize the control that teams could have on their contracts, which is the reason that a trade for Detmers, let’s say, would command more than Skubal.
“Now with Detmers and Soriano, you still got them for two years after this, so it’s going to be a high price tag,” Nightengale said. “Some people think you might have to pay more for Detmers than you would, you know, a Skubal per se, just because you get him for two and a half months, and not just half a month. So it would be interesting. I mean, yeah, really a high price tag. But I think the Angels have got to listen to see if they can move those guys and really kind of rebuild an entire farm system.”

The Angels could “get a ton” for Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano
Nightengale would continue talking about the Angels regarding Detmers and Soriano, saying that if the team were to move on from them, they could potentially revitalize their farm system.
“If they move those two guys, they’re going to get a ton for them because this is a seller’s market. If you want to be bad in one year, this is a year you want to be bad because everyone’s going to be paying a high price to get your guys,” Nightengale said.
At any rate, it remains to be seen what the Angels will do ahead of the trade deadline, as the team is currently at a 39-61 record, which puts them last in the AL West.
