Mike Elko is entering his third season as head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies in 2026, fresh off a College Football Playoff appearance.
Texas A&M began the 2025 college football season with a flawless 11-0 start before dropping back-to-back games to closeout the year. The Aggies fell to the rival Texas Longhorns in the final game of the regular season, then lost to the Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the CFP.
Elko took the podium for SEC Media Days on Wednesday, and explained how he’s motivating his team before the coming season.
“I show them our trophy case, and it’s empty,” Elko said, via On3 Sports. “I think they’re all very aware of that. I think, listen, we live in a lot of worlds, and so we’re obviously happy with the things that we accomplished, we’re happy with the direction of our program. But it’s also not lost on us that we haven’t won the hardware that we’re searching for.”
Texas A&M hasn’t won and SEC Championship since joining the conference in 2012, and hasn’t secured a national title since 1939.
“That gets us into a mindset of growth and getting back to work to go finish this thing a little bit better than we did last year and put ourself in a better position maybe to compete for some trophies,” Elko added.
The Aggies will open up their 2026 college football schedule with a matchup against Missouri State on Sept. 5.
