With NHL free agency starting over three weeks ago, most of this year’s top UFAs have landed their new contracts.
Although this is the case, there are still some notable names who have yet to find their new homes.
The best UFA still available for the taking is future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane. This should change soon, as the 37-year-old is still a solid top-six forward at this point in his career. Because of this, he will be a good addition to the team that ends up landing him.
During a recent appearance on 104.3 The Score, Chris Chelios shared that Kane told him that he is choosing between the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres. With this, they appear to be the two teams to watch right now.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Erik Beaston predicted that the Blackhawks will end up being the team that signs Kane this summer.
“Buffalo has been a team at the center of Kane rumors from the beginning, but there is something to be said about having the ability to return to the organization that you helped establish as a modern dynasty,” Beaston wrote. “Prediction: Kane returns to Chicago on a short-term deal.”
If the Blackhawks successfully brought back Kane, it would be significant for the Original Six club. It is no secret that the Blackhawks desperately need to upgrade their right wing position. Signing a skilled veteran winger like Kane would provide the Blackhawks with just that.
Kane would also be a great mentor for Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks’ other young players as they continue their rebuild. The Blackhawks could use more veteran players as they look to be more competitive next season, so bringing in a three-time Stanley Cup champion like Kane would make a lot of sense for Chicago.
When looking at a specific spot in the Blackhawks’ lineup where Kane could fit, their first line with Bedard and Tyler Bertuzzi stands out. Seeing Kane and Bedard on the same line would be a real treat to watch, but time will tell if it comes to fruition.
