Florida Gators coach Jon Sumrall is entering his first season as a head coach at the SEC level.
And during his appearance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, Sumrall made it very clear that he views the SEC and Big Ten as the premiere conferences in college football.
Sumrall believes the days of a “Power 5” are long gone. In fact, he believes the top of the college football food chain has been narrowed down to a “Power 2.”
“In my opinion, there is a clear delineation: there’s the Power Two,” Sumrall said, via college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports. “I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I think there’s clearly the ‘Power Two.’”
“I’m not knocking any league. And then there’s a couple behind that [the Big 12 and ACC] and the American’s right there,” he added. “Like last year’s ACC champion was who? Duke. We beat them in Tulane.”
Sumrall’s Tulane squad went 11-3 in 2025, closing out the season with a first-round College Football Playoff loss to the SEC’s Ole Miss Rebels. The Green Wave took down the eventual ACC-champion Duke Blue Devils in their third game of the season, notching a 34-27 final score.
Florida will open up its 2026 college football season with a matchup against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sept. 5.
