Amy Coleman plans to develop an accessory dwelling unit at her house in the Wilshire Park neighborhood of Midland. She applied for a specific-use designation for the property.
Accessory dwelling units are secondary housing units on the same property as a primary residence. In Coleman’s case, the unit would be in an existing structure on her property, which she hopes to convert into a mother-in-law suite for family members who require care. Under the Midland City Code, the units cannot be rented out through short-term rental services such as Airbnb.
Midland’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the request to the Midland City Council on July 20. The council approved it the following day.
