Midlander receives approval for mother-in-law suite addition to home

City code bars the unit from being rented through Airbnb or similar services.

Clifford Mitchell plans to develop an accessory dwelling unit at his house in Midland’s North Park Hill neighborhood. He applied for a specific-use designation for his property.

Accessory dwelling units are separate living spaces added to or built on the same property as a house. In Mitchell’s case, the unit will be a mother-in-law suite that provides friends and family a place to stay when visiting. Under Midland City Code, these units cannot be rented out through Airbnb or similar services.

Midland’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the request to the Midland City Council on July 20, and the council approved it the following day.
