MIDDLEBURG, Va. (DC News Now) — The quiet streets of Middleburg could soon welcome one of the nation’s highest-profile families.
Vice President JD Vance’s family is preparing to lease a property near the western Loudoun County town, prompting local law enforcement to begin coordinating security plans with the U.S. Secret Service while assuring residents that public safety services will not be affected.
“As we are still working through operational and timing issues and questions with USSS and others, Sheriff will not do any interviews,” the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement to DC News Now.
The sheriff’s office said many details cannot be discussed publicly for security reasons but said that “whatever may be asked of local law enforcement to assist with security and transportation escorts, Sheriff Chapman is determined that service to the residents and communities of Loudoun County will not be reduced or compromised in any way.”
The Vance family is expected to continue using the vice president’s official residence at Number One Observatory Circle on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington while leasing the Middleburg-area property.
A flurry of Secret Service activity in the area has sparked the attention of locals. One woman told DC News Now she noticed her car had a blue marking on it. She said she contacted local authorities and later learned that agents had been conducting advance security in the area.
Others said they’ve noticed federal security vehicles on the quiet streets of Western Loudoun.
“It’s just an old town feeling,” said Leigh Johnson of the town. “I think it’s great. I think he’s kind of a people’s person. He grew up like a lot of us.”
Local hair salon owner Dwight Grant said the town gets its share of high-profile visitors and residents.
“If you ever need a barber, come see me. I would love to talk to you, help you get settled into the area,” Grant said.
LSCO spokesman Thomas Julia said that the office will ask the Secret Service to reimburse the county for additional security costs incurred due to the Vances’ presence, but it is the agency’s policy to not reimburse local agencies.
