Michigan chaos, Husker duo hype, SEC threats and other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have struggled mightily, especially in football, over the last decade-plus, but for the most part, they’ve tried to do things the right way. That makes the Warde Manuel debacle even more frustrating: Michigan has two national titles in two different major sports in the last four years, and yet the athletic department is a mess. More than a mess, it stinks from the head down, and that’s the point: success on the field has not led to order off it.

Nebraska Cornhuskers do the right thing, and Michigan gets the wins

• On Monday, Michigan released a summary of an exhaustive investigation into Manuel and his department in the wake of former football head coach Sherrone Moore’s meltdown, arrest and firing. While the Wolverines claimed that Manuel’s leadership wasn’t the problem, they also admitted his department did not react quickly enough to things going sour, and now Manuel will step down at the end of the calendar year.

• Michigan claims it can’t release the entire report because of “attorney-client privilege.” That doesn’t make a ton of sense since the university is the client and can waive privilege. It’s more likely they aren’t releasing the full report because they know it would make them look worse than the summary, which could have been sanitized.

• In other Big Ten news, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz claimed that the reason the B1G has won three straight national titles in football is that the teams have a weak non-conference slate. It’s not clear how a relatively easy first three games means that teams like Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan mowed through the playoffs, but Nebraska fans should be excited considering what the Huskers’ non-conference looks like.

Nebraska commits get more praise before coming to campus

• Trae Taylor and Tay Ellis were recently named among the best QB/WR combos in high school across the country. Andy Villamarzo reportedly placed the two Nebraska commits at the No. 6 combo. According to a recent On3 article, they were also the only pair committed to the same collegiate school. The excitement over the pair just continues to grow and will be fun as heck to watch this fall at Millard South.

• Sam Hirschy is one of the better defensive line targets in the 2028 class. After getting an offer from Nebraska, wants to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to the fanbase and Memorial Stadium on gameday. “I know that they got some of the best fans in the country for college football,” he said. “I can’t wait to see the fans and the atmosphere in a game in the fall.”

• Former Nebraska pitcher Aaron Bummer has found a new life in pro baseball. He signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have seen this show before

• Back over in SEC Media Days, Kentucky head coach Will Stein did his best Curt Cignetti impression when he was asked why the Wildcats will finally put it all together and be better than they have in the past: “Because of me.”

• Meanwhile, the SEC continues to threaten to break away from the NCAA entirely if it doesn’t get its way. While the conference keeps talking like this, it’s hard to imagine its broadcast partner, ESPN, being remotely enthused about that type of step.
