The Miami Heat sent the basketball world into a frenzy on Tuesday night by seemingly leaking that LeBron James was returning to South Beach. The Heat have been among the leading suitors for James in free agency, and they posted a video on their official YouTube channel titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026.”
The video was quickly taken down, suggesting it might have been a mistake, but Heat fans were starting to dream. Unfortunately, their team has now confirmed it was indeed a mistake, via the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang.
“But according to a Heat spokesperson, the ‘LeBron James Introductory Press Conference | July 27, 2026’ video was mistakenly made public by the Heat’s social media department while preparing for the possibility of James eventually deciding to join the Heat this offseason,” Chiang wrote. “The Heat spokesperson said there is currently no validity to the video.”
The Heat, like any other team, were just preparing for the scenario. All the teams part of the James sweepstakes would have marketing and promotional content ready, just in case he joins.
Chiang also revealed that Heat president Pat Riley is traveling and is not expected back in Miami until August. Riley is almost certainly going to be present for James’ introductory press conference, if there is one.
Riley has confirmed that discussions have taken place regarding bringing James back to the Heat. The 22-time All-Star spent four seasons with the franchise from 2010 to 2014, winning titles, Finals MVPs, and MVPs in 2012 and 2013.
Now, James and Riley hadn’t parted ways on the best of terms. Some wondered if the latter’s presence would make the Heat a less attractive destination for the former.
Riley has shared that all is well between him and James now. They hadn’t really been keeping in touch all these years, but there are no hard feelings. Riley understands that James wanted to go back to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 to bring a championship to his hometown team.
Speaking of the Cavaliers, they are among the leading suitors as well, along with the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Philadelphia 76ers. James is likely headed to the Eastern Conference, though, so it’s looking like it might well be the Heat, Cavaliers, or 76ers.
LeBron James Free Agency Update
This is the fourth time that James has become a free agent in his career, and he has never taken this long to make a decision. This delay led NBA commissioner Adam Silver to urge him to decide quickly, so that they could make the schedule for next season.
James’ agent, Rich Paul, then revealed he told Silver he cannot rush his client into making a decision. Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports Group, also made it clear that he is not delaying the decision because he wants attention. This is purely about James, who averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game in 2025-26 for the Los Angeles Lakers, making sure he gets it right.
Now, there was some chatter on Monday about James making his decision in the next 24 hours, but he didn’t. NBA insider Dave McMenamin had also made it clear there would be no decision on Tuesday. McMenamin said James is still weighing up his options, and all we can do is wait.
