While some theories suggest he could be waiting for Anthony Davis, a new report from 92.3’s Andy Baskin paints a different picture of why this process is taking so much longer. Apparently, LeBron was actually ready to announce his choice last week, until Adam Silver put public pressure on him to decide.
“Here’s what I was told yesterday by a reliable source,” said Baskin. “Last week, LeBron’s crew was probably ready to make an announcement. ‘Irritated’ was the word I was told by the commissioner pushing them…so they decided to hold back.”
It’s not typical for a star of LeBron’s caliber to linger so long on picking their next team. By now, the rosters are usually set across the NBA, and the work can begin on planning the schedule for next season. But as James continues to stall, he’s got the entire market on hold, leaving the NBA office clueless on how to proceed. This fact was mentioned by league commissioner Adam Silver, who made a humble plea to LeBron to make a decision soon.
The message was seemingly not well-received from James’ camp, and it doesn’t take a genius to see why. Throughout his career, LeBron has always been stubborn when it comes to controlling the moment. Whenever he’s made a big announcement in the past, he’s gone to great lengths to ensure it’s on his terms and not spoiled by media or fans. This year, even at 41, he wants to maintain that same control. So when Adam Silver tried to pressure him to act now, he wasn’t having it.
Whether he changed his mind completely or simply decided not to announce his decision is unclear, but LeBron’s goal is to keep everyone guessing until he’s ready to announce it himself. It’s all in his timing, and LeBron has so much to consider before settling on what is likely his final NBA destination. That’s why he won’t let anyone, not even the NBA commissioner, try to interrupt the process.
As for when we might see James finally decide, only LeBron has any idea. Even if he’s already made his choice, there’s nothing stopping him from staying quiet into August or September. He can take as long as he needs, and he’s already made it clear to teams not to wait on his arrival.
