Charania spoke with Paul on Tuesday morning, and the agent said there is no decision or timetable on a potential announcement, the insider said on NBA Today. It has been over three weeks since the four-time NBA champion became a free agent, and the rest of the players looking for teams are in a waiting pattern.
Several teams have been linked to James, such as the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers. Charania also reported that those three organizations continue to be the focus for James. However, how does James’ timeline affect Miami moving forward?
How LeBron James’ Timeline Affects the Miami Heat
The Heat, much like other organizations, are waiting for James to sign with a new team. Pat Riley and Miami should feel confident about their chances, but it is impacting how the organization handles its business this offseason. After all, there are other players out there that make sense if James goes elsewhere.
Miami has 12 roster spots filled after trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo and signing Tim Hardaway Jr. this offseason. More likely than not, the Heat will only use 14 roster spots. This means they have two more contracts to hand out this summer. The longer this process drags out, the more likely that Miami loses out on some players.
For example, if a team goes to DeMar DeRozan offering a great situation and contract, he could sign and end his free agent process. In this scenario, the Heat would lose out on a very good replacement waiting for James. This is one reason why DeRozan should wait. However, he could get overwhelmed by an offer in the meantime.
