There hasn’t been much cause for excitement for the New York Mets in 2026, as they have fallen flat on their face, all the way to the bottom of the NL East. As if their rough end to 2025 wasn’t enough, the Mets entered play on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 42-59 record, and they should inevitably be a selling ballclub come the trade deadline.

But on Tuesday, rookie starter Zac Thornton continued to be a bright spot for a Mets team that’s in dire need of someone to re-infuse the languid franchise with renewed hope. Thornton had himself another brilliant start against a good team in the Brewers, recording six innings of shutout baseball to lead New York to a 4-0 win over the NL Central leader — recording the first win of his career in the process.

This is coming off the heels of seven innings of shutout baseball against the streaking Boston Red Sox nine days ago, and considering how well the Red Sox and Brewers have been playing as of late, Thornton’s incredible performances become magnified all the more. In fact, he’s in the middle of an 18-inning scoreless streak, which is the longest by a Mets rookie since 2016 (Steven Matz), as per @Jolly_Olive on X.

Thornton is bringing excitement to the Mets at a time where everything looks grim, although fans will have to be cautious with their expectations for the 24-year-old lefty. He has been quite fortunate on the BABIP front, and he’s not blowing away opposing hitters with his stuff (he only struck out two on Tuesday in the win over the Brewers).

But he has played in three different levels of baseball this year and has been impressive enough to warrant a spot in the Mets rotation from hereon out. He will have to continue limiting hard contact while missing more bats if he were to sustain the success he’s had through the first few starts of his career, but there is no denying that he has been a very promising young starter in the early goings of his life in the big leagues.
