Original Little House on the Prairie cast member Melissa Gilbert is sharing her thoughts on Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie series.
Gilbert, 62, starred in the NBC series as Laura Ingalls Wilder alongside Michael Landon (Charles), Karen Grassle (Caroline), Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary) and twins Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush (Carrie).
Netflix has revived the franchise, but not as a reboot of the ‘70s classic. Instead, it more strictly adapts the semi-autobiographical books, which follow the Ingalls’ journey to start a homestead just outside the town of Independence, Kansas.
In a post shared to Substack, Gilbert wrote: “I have remained silent since the release of the new version of Little House on the Prairie,” adding that she doubted she could be “fully objective because I am too deeply involved to weigh in without emotion” and also did not feel it was her “place” to offer a take.
But she did, she added, feel compelled to speak to whether either the new Netflix series or the original were “historically accurate.”
“The short answer is no, neither are entirely accurate to the times nor the books,” she wrote.
Gilbert went on to list some of those inaccuracies, including characters’ ages and the locations where events take place in both shows.
“My hope is that folks realize that these are all perfect examples of dramatic license. Even the real Laura took dramatic license in writing her books,” Gilbert added. “For example, in the book, Little House on the Prairie, all three Ingalls girls are older than they were in real life.”
She continued: “So rather than getting all twisted up in what’s real and what’s dramatized, maybe just sit back and go for the ride the creative minds behind these shows want to take you on. If you like it, stick with it. If you don’t, you don’t have to watch.”

Dean Butler also recently shared his thoughts on the new Netflix show.
Butler joined the original series, which ran from 1974 to 1983, in season 6 as Almanzo Wilder, who later married Gilbert’s character.
In a video posted to Instagram, Butler explained that there’s one specific thing about the new series he really enjoys.
“Something that I love about the program that I think would have been really fun in the original — which we did not do ... is the family singing,” he added. “Writers have rolled in songs that Pa played on his fiddle, and the family is singing along, and they’re doing it beautifully.”
