Matlock finally brought Madeline “Matty” Matlock’s revenge plan against the Jacobson Moore law firm to an epic conclusion, ending the premise of the CBS legal drama as audiences knew it. In Matlock Seasons 1 and 2, Kathy Bates’ leading character goes undercover to hold the lawyers who hid pharmaceutical documents that could have prevented the opioid epidemic accountable.
As Madeline and Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) worked together throughout Matlock Season 2, they filled in Julian Markston (Jason Ritter), with all parties agreeing to focus their prosecution on Senior (Beau Bridges). Thinking they had the evidence needed to make their case, they went after Senior in the finale, which provided one final, satisfying twist in Madeline’s secret plan.
Matlock Season 2’s Finale Was the End of Matlock as Audiences Knew It
In Matlock Season 2’s finale, all was finally well as Julian stepped up to hold his father and himself accountable. Though Julian no longer had immunity and implicated himself through his actions, Markston operated covertly just before his father’s retirement speech, working with FBI agent Lida Gutierrez (Gina Rodriguez) to get his father to confess.
Julian got Senior to confess and incriminate the rest of Jacobson Moore’s controlling partners, who were all in on the Wellbexa cover-up. Markston’s actions allowed Madeline and Olympia to walk away from the case without scrutiny, with his and Senior’s confessions providing the FBI with all it needs to arrest the executive board, all of whom were present for the merger.
After saying goodbye to her daughter, Ellie Kingston (Marnee Carpenter), in Matlock Season 2, Episode 14, Madeline was willing to put the case aside and proposed dropping it after Senior put the Wellbrexa files back into discovery, which undermined their prosecution. It appears that’s the direction the finale was heading, but Matlock had one final twist in store.
As Madeline and Olympia walked out of Senior’s retirement and Julian got him to confess, Matlock revealed that Markston wasn’t willing to drop the criminal charges, and that Senior was being recorded after all. As the FBI storms the building and arrests the Jacobson Moore partners, Madeline’s mission is finally over, which means Matlock Season 3 will redirect its premise.
Matlock Season 3 Will Feel Like a Different Show
Now that the FBI has arrested Senior and the other Jacobson Moore partners, the finale of Season 2 is the end of the series as audiences know it. It concludes Madeline, Olympia, and Julian's mission, meaning Matlock Season 3 will shift its focus away from Madeline’s flagship case and rework its format based on Season 2's conclusion.
Julian taking the fall means that Madeline didn't have to expose or incriminate herself, meaning she can continue to practice law. Madeline plans to continue to use the alias “Matlock,” which allows the series to keep Madeline’s double life, another key premise of the Matlock reboot, intact. The development paves the way for Matlock Season 3, already renewed by CBS.
Matlock will likely pivot to focus on Madeline and Olympia opening a firm after Edwin (Sam Anderson) agrees they can stay. In Matlock Season 2’s ending, they joke about whether it will be called “Lawrence & Matlock” or “Matlock & Lawrence,” signaling their next step. Therefore, Madeline and Olympia can continue taking on social justice cases, holding big corporations accountable.
That said, CBS is making a scheduling change to its Thursday night programming, moving Matlock and Ghosts to its midseason lineup in the 2026-2027 network TV schedule. Therefore, the next installment could have fewer episodes than Seasons 1 and 2. Still, the shorter runtime could suit Matlock Season 3 as the CBS drama pivots and introduces a new premise.
