First lady Melania Trump drew attention at the World Cup for both her warm greeting and designer bag during a private post-match meeting with the Spanish royal family

First lady Melania Trump appeared to ‘charm’ the King of Spain during their meeting at the World Cup final match, as she sported a $7,200 handbag while greeting him.

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía watched the match from a heavily secured VIP suite alongside Donald and Melania Trump, while the heir to the throne and her sister sat in a nearby section. After the final whistle, the Spanish Royal Family privately greeted the U.S. president and first lady inside the stadium.

Photos from the moment showed Melania carrying a Chanel 19 handbag, which retails for a whopping $7,200 on the designer’s website. The bag features shiny lambskin, gold-tone hardware, and a silver-tone and ruthenium-finish metal. This comes after a body language expert claimed that the first couple appeared distant during the outing.

In one image, the first lady held the purse under her left arm as she shook King Felipe VI’s hand with her right. Both were seen smiling during the interaction, which appeared to take place in a parking garage area following the match.

The images quickly gained traction online, with social media users sharing their reactions to the moment. One person wrote on X, “Everyone seemed very charmed by her…and FLOTUS seemed very happy.”

Another added, “Europeans always connect,” while someone else commented, “Love seeing her handbag choices!” One user joked, “A king, mogged by a handbag.”

The Spanish royal family once again proved to be lucky for La Roja following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in a tense final.

The match itself was long and closely contested, with Spain only securing the win during extra time. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal, prompting an emotional celebration from the Royal Family that reflected the reaction across Spain. The FC Barcelona forward has become one of the national team’s standout players, known for his speed, finishing ability, and competitive edge.

During the game, the Royal Family was split between two sections of the stadium. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia remained in the secured VIP suite alongside the Trumps, while Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía watched from another area with fellow fans.

Trump’s presence at the event required heightened security measures, including a Secret Service operation with bulletproof barriers. Cameras captured the presidential couple greeting the Spanish royals only after the match had concluded.

For Leonor and Sofía, the trip to New York marked a significant moment. It was the first time the sisters had accompanied their parents to a men’s World Cup final.

The Princess of Asturias attended not only as heir to the throne, but also as the future commander in chief of Spain’s Armed Forces, having completed her military training this July at the Air and Space Academy in San Javier, Murcia. Infanta Sofía has also taken on a more visible public role this year, with the appearance following her first public speech alongside her parents and sister.

When Spain won its first World Cup in Johannesburg in 2010, Felipe and Letizia were present as the Prince and Princess of Asturias. At the time, Leonor was 4 and Sofía was 3, meaning the sisters celebrated the historic victory from Spain rather than in person.
