CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 29-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday during what police said began as a child custody exchange in the parking lot of Cleveland’s Fifth District police station.

The man killed in the shooting was identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner as Marcus Driggins Jr. of Cleveland.

The shooting happened around 12:50 a.m. at the Fifth District station on East 55th Street.

According to Cleveland police, a child custody exchange had been arranged in the station’s parking lot. During the exchange, a verbal argument broke out between Driggins, who investigators believe was the child’s father, and two women, one of whom police believe is the child’s mother, investigators said.

The argument ended, and everyone left the area in separate vehicles, police said.

Investigators said the parties encountered one another again a short time later on a nearby street. For reasons that remain under investigation, the two women attempted to return to the police station, authorities said. Police believe Driggins intentionally rammed their vehicle as they drove toward the district and struck it again after both vehicles entered the station parking lot.

The two women got out of their vehicle with the child and attempted to enter the police station, according to investigators.

Police said Driggins exited his vehicle and approached the women. During the confrontation, gunfire erupted.

One of the women ran inside the police station to alert officers, police said. Officers immediately responded, detained the woman believed to have fired the gun and began providing medical aid to Driggins, authorities said.

Cleveland EMS transported Driggins to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

Police said they recovered a firearm at the scene. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

Authorities have not released the identity of the woman who fired the shots, and police had not announced any charges as of Wednesday morning.
