Family vacation ends in unthinkable tragedy after pool incident in Italy

An 11-year-old girl died after her hair became entangled in the suction system of a swimming pool while vacationing with her family at a seaside resort in northwestern Italy, prompting an investigation and renewed calls for stricter pool safety standards, People reported. The incident happened July 14 at the Bagni Segesta beach resort in Sestri Levante, a coastal town near Genoa, according to The Mirror.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the girl, identified only as Alice, struggling beneath the water before realizing her hair had become trapped by the pool’s suction drain, The Sun reported. Several people attempted to pull her free but were unable to release her until the pool’s circulation system was shut off, according to Italian media reports.

Emergency crews performed CPR at the scene before Alice was airlifted to the Gaslini Pediatric Hospital in Genoa. Despite lifesaving efforts, the child later died from her injuries, hospital officials confirmed.

In a statement shared by Italian media, hospital officials expressed sympathy for Alice’s family and thanked them for choosing to donate her organs, saying the decision could offer hope to other families facing serious medical challenges.

Italian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incident to determine whether safety failures contributed to the girl’s death. Prosecutors are reportedly investigating the case as possible manslaughter, and an autopsy has been ordered as part of the inquiry. No arrests have been announced.

Following the tragedy, Italy’s Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci, called for stronger regulations governing swimming pool safety. He said the fatal accident underscored the importance of improved safety measures and close adult supervision around pools, particularly after several recent child drownings and pool-related deaths across the country.

Investigators continue to examine the pool’s equipment and maintenance records as they work to determine exactly how the suction system trapped the girl’s hair. Authorities have not released additional details about the condition of the pool or whether any mechanical defects have been identified.
