A man was charged with murder after a shooting victim died at an area hospital, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Xavier Ramon Daniels, 28, was originally charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime following the Sunday morning shooting in Five Points, police said Tuesday in a news release. But the attempted murder charge was upgraded after the victim died, according to the release.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.
The shooting happened at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Harden Street, police said. That’s next to the intersection with Gervais Street.
There was a fight, and at some point Daniels pulled out a gun and then another man was shot, according to the release. Information about what led to the fight, and if Daniels and the victim knew each other prior to the incident, was not available.
Officers responded to reports of the shooting where the victim was located then taken to an area hospital, police said. He has since died because of his injuries, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
Police said they identified and questioned a suspected shooter, later identified as Daniels.
Daniels confessed to shooting the victim, and the incident was captured on surveillance video, according to the release.
Daniels was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set for Daniels, who is scheduled to return to court on the murder charge Sept. 25, according to Richland County judicial records.
Hours before Sunday’s gunfire, there was another fatal shooting in downtown Columbia, police said.
On Saturday, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1100 block of Hampton Street, police said. Officers found both a 28-year-old man, who was arrested on multiple charges, and the 31-year-old shooting victim who died at the scene, according to police.
