LSU baseball signee won't join Tigers, flips to Mountain West school

An LSU baseball signee won't be a part of Jay Johnson's 2027 roster. Mason Belding, who can play catcher and corner infield, will head to Nevada.

The move is not unexpected as the LSU coaching staff works to cut the roster after the MLB Draft was kind to LSU. The Tigers lost some top-ranked signees to the pros, but a handful of elite prospects will pass up the minor leagues and attend LSU. That's good news, but it means LSU has fewer available roster spots than it once envisioned -- a good problem to have.

PerfectGame ranks Belding as the No. 66 catcher in the class. He originally committed to LSU in September of 2024. This leaves LSU's projected roster around 40 players.

LSU's depth at catcher remains strong heading into 2027. Cade Arrambide and Omar Serna will likely split time behind the plate, taking turns between catching and DH'ing. Eddie Yamin will also compete for at-bats at multiple positions, including catcher. LSU will not sign a catcher in the 2026 recruiting class, per PerfectGame's list of commitments.
