South Carolina baseball landed a commitment on Tuesday from a junior college arm. Former Central Arizona College left-handed pitcher Nic Gibson announced his commitment to the Gamecocks.
Gibson, a class of 2023 high school product, spent three years at Central Arizona, meaning he has two years of eligibility left at the college level.
If Gibson’s name sounds familiar to Gamecock fans, it is because this is not the first time he has committed to South Carolina baseball.
The Puyallup, Washington native originally pledged his services to the Gamecocks back in 2024 over multiple other SEC programs. That came after his first year of junior college ball. New Carolina pitching coach Matt Williams (now in his second stint) took Gibson’s commitment that season, too.
Gibson has had some MLB Draft buzz at times during his career and has some intriguing stuff from the left side. He played with fellow USC commitment Brock Johnson at Central Arizona.
Gibson throws in the low-90s but has three off-speed pitches. His change-up has late bite, while both his curveball and slider have big break potential.
Gibson’s fastball has a lot of run, and his lanky frame (he’s listed at 6-2 but has long arms and legs, creating the illusion of him being taller) provides some deceptiveness to his delivery.
Complete stats are difficult to find for Gibson’s time at Central Arizona, as he missed a large portion of 2025 and 2026 because of Tommy John surgery. However, he struck out 26 batters in 19 innings back in 2024.
Walks have been an issue for Gibson in the past. If he cleans that up and returns to health, he has enough swing-and-miss stuff to compete for innings in 2027.
