Louise McSharry has hit back at being 'policed' over her mixed-sounding accent by people in Ireland.
The broadcaster revealed that she is consistently trolled over her accent and wants to know why, as a nation, Irish people are so focused on accents.
The mum-of-two, who recently spoke about her Mounjaro journey, spent her childhood years in the States, followed by a stint in England, and readily admits she easily picks up accents.
She's completely thrown, however, by how much she gets called out over her accent and, in particular, why Irish people use accents to 'put people in their place'.
In a video message, Louise starts out asking: 'Why are Irish people so obsessed with accents?'
Explaining her mixed-sounding accent, she said: 'I have a mixed accent, right, I accept that.
'I was born in Dublin; I was born in Palmerstown... and then when I was seven I moved to America, and I lived in America until I was 15, so when I lived in America I had a completely American accent.'
'Then I moved to England for a year, where I developed a bit of an English accent because I pick up accents easily, and then I moved back to Dublin, and I've been in Dublin now for the last 25 years or more.
'I just have a bit of an American accent from my childhood years in America.'
She said: 'Every single time I do anything that has an audience beyond my usual audience who know and understand the reason that I sound like this, the comments are full of people slagging me off or being like, "What's with the fake accent?"'
She recalls one incident where she had filmed a video about Phibsborough and was hit with comments telling her she didn't sound like she was from Phibsborough.
Louise hit back saying: 'Actually, I'll have you know that my dad lived on the same road that I live on now in Phibsborough as a kid, and when I was a kid before I moved to America, this is where I came to visit my grandparents; I [spent] a huge part of my childhood in Phibsborough.'
'The policing of people based on their accents is just off the charts here, and I'm so tired of it.'
'...I just don't understand why we're so hellbent on putting people in their place according to accent and where they're from... people have different accents for loads of different reasons; I just don't get it.'
Many of her followers agreed and shared their own stories of being judged on their accents, while another person offered in reply: 'I think a lot of it is just that we seem to have the need to place people.'
