Los Angeles Rams once again plan to utilize heavy 13 personnel usage (one running back and three tight ends) in 2026 after leading the NFL by a wide margin with 331 snaps and a 30% usage rate in 2025. Therefore, the Rams are expected to keep four tight ends on the 53-man roster, with Tyler Higbee, Terrance Ferguson, and Max Klare essentially locks. That leaves the five remaining tight ends competing for the final roster spot or two if they choose to keep five.
One player who is on the bubble is Davis Allen. The former fifth-round pick is coming off a solid third season, posting career highs in receiving and playing time. Allen hauled in 24 receptions on 33 targets for 208 yards and three touchdowns across 17 regular-season games, five starts, and 585 offensive snaps. He is entering a contract year and is slated to hit free agency next March.
The Los Angeles Rams’ ex-5th-round pick must stand out during training camp to save his spot
In a Rams Wire article, Brock Vierra identified three players who must stand out in training camp to establish roles on the team. He named Davis Allen, noting that he is in a difficult spot since the Rams drafted Terrance Ferguson and Max Klare back-to-back drafts while also re-signing Tyler Higbee. Vierra added that Allen will be fighting for playing time throughout training camp, and it remains to be seen what his role will be in 2026.
“Allen is in a tough spot due to the state of the Rams’ tight end room and his contract situation. Situated behind Colby Parkinson and Tyler Higbee on the depth chart, Allen is fighting for snaps, and the competition has only increased as Terrance Ferguson appears to be Sean McVay’s next superweapon. The team drafted Max Klare out of Ohio State this offseason, too,”Vierra said.
“Allen is in the final year of his rookie deal, and while he’s proven to be a promising talent and consistent rotational player, a health setback from a few years back prohibited him from becoming the team’s TE1. Allen does benefit from the Rams’ hevy usage of multiple tight ends within their offense and he could see more snaps as the Rams work to keep Higbee healthy for the postseason.
“However, whatever that role is has yet to be determined.”
There is a chance the front office trades the former fifth-round pick this offseason, hoping to receive draft compensation rather than releasing him outright. His $1.145 million salary, along with his improvement as a blocker and receiver, could make him an attractive trade target.
He isn’t the only TE who could be moved
As previously discussed on Gridiron Heroics in May, Bleacher Report named Colby Parkinson as the best player the Rams could still move this offseason. Parkinson is coming off a strong second season in Los Angeles, setting career highs with 408 receiving yards and eight touchdowns across 621 regular-season snaps, the most at the position on the team. However, he enters the final year of his deal and is scheduled to earn a $5.5 million base salary, $7 million in cash, and a $9.08 million cap hit.
If the front office trades or releases him, they would free up $7 million in cap space.
