Lamine Yamal’s father did not attend Spain’s World Cup final triumph due to an unfortunate family tragedy.
Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, did not travel to North America this summer to see his son lead Spain on a historic World Cup run that culminated with a dominant 1-0 victory over Lionel Messi and Argentina in Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
Nasraoui has been a familiar face in the stands throughout his son’s career, but chose to remain in Spain during the World Cup as he grieves the death of his father and Yamal’s grandfather. Reports indicate Yamal’s grandfather passed away recently, and the family has chosen to grieve in private. Although he was not in person to see his 19-year-old son, whose full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, add soccer’s most prestigious trophy to his collection, Nasraoui has shown his support on social media with several posts about Yamal in the leadup to and after Sunday’s match.
Nasraoui posted several pictures and videos on Instagram, where he has 1.4 million followers, including an AI-generated video of Messi handing over the trophy to Yamal, Messi hugging Yamal on the pitch, and finally his son lifting the World Cup trophy during the post-game ceremony that saw Donald Trump remain on stage with the Spanish national team.
While his father was not there, Yamal was still able to celebrate Spain’s World Cup triumph with some of his family members, including his mother, Sheila Ebana, and his three-year-old half-brother Keyne, who stole the show throughout the tournament and during Sunday’s post-game celebrations.
Nasraoui, who originally hails from Morocco, has been a prominent supporting figure since the start of his son’s soccer career.
The two were on the field together during post-game celebrations after Spain won the 2024 European Championship, a tournament in which his son broke out as a global superstar.
Just over one month later, a scary incident took place as Nasraoui was stabbed multiple times in a parking lot in the town of Mataro outside of Barcelona following an alleged argument with a group of men. He spent several days in the hospital before being released.

During this World Cup, other reports suggest that Nasraoui did not travel North America during the World Cup due to his own medical condition that prevents him from taking long flights.
Yamal broke onto the scene playing for Spanish club Barcelona when he was just 15 years old and quickly became a key player for the La Liga side.
At age 16, he became the youngest player to make his senior national team debut for Spain.
During the 2026 World Cup, Yamal, who entered the tournament tending to a hamstring injury, scored one goal in eight matches but was a key player for Spain as they won their second World Cup in men's national team history.
