Democratic congresswomen launches scathing attack on Donald Trump's World Cup appearance

Arizona's Democratic Congresswoman Yaasmin Ansari became yet another American political voice to question why Donald Trump was present at the World Cup trophy lift

Just as Spanish captain Rodri was about to put the cherry on top of Spain's stunning 2026 FIFA World Cup run by lifting the Jules Rimet trophy, Donald Trump wandered aimlessly into the celebration in an attempted show of narcissism.

Rodri, the World Cup Golden Ball winner, wouldn't have it: he coolly escorted the President to the edge of the stage before FIFA boss Gianni Infantino came rushing over to shoo Trump away.

Democratic Congresswoman Yaasmin Ansari has publicly hit out at Trump since she was sworn in from Arizona's third district in January 2025. "Nobody wanted him there," the 34-year-old daughter of Iranian immigrants said of Trump's World Cup showing.

"I love the World Cup," she continued to Meidas Touch, per the Daily Mail. "It showed us how much unites us as opposed to what divides us, and Donald Trump is the exact opposite of that."

Spain eliminated both Trump and Infantino from online images of the team's trophy lift celebrating the nation's second World Cup title and first since 2010.

Ansari emphasized that Trump didn't just ruin the World Cup final trophy lift. "He made the entire experience of having the World Cup hosted by the United States so difficult," she added.

"We know that, for example, they made Iranian players travel in and out of the country. They were discriminated against. We had referees from Somalia not even be let into the country."

Iran, qualifiers from Asia, had to move its World Cup training base from Tempe, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico City. The team would fly into the United States on game days, then fly directly out after the game.

Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry into the United States at a Florida airport after being selected by FIFA to serve as a World Cup referee. Artan was not provided a direct reason for his denial of entry, and he returned to Somalia.

Earlier this year, Ansari called Trump both "mentally unstable and an "evil human being" in an interview with The Guardian.

There is no doubt in my mind he is mentally unstable and not all there, but I also believe he is a deeply troubled, evil human being that only cares about himself and his family,” she said.

“He has shown that throughout his entire life. He has shown that throughout his presidency by ripping away healthcare and basic necessities from the average American, while he and his family have made billions of dollars.”
