Many NBA teams are finalizing their rosters before entering training camp. However, with several noteworthy free agents still in play, some teams have been conservative about maintaining roster spots. With a player like LeBron James on the market, teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves have more than enough reason to be frugal.
Needless to say, LeBron James has garnered considerable interest from teams around the league. Although the list of potential landing spots has been narrowed down considerably, some teams continue to try to improve their chances.
For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards has been the driving force in recruiting the superstar. Now, The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski reported that LaMelo Ball has also joined the fray. While speaking about the Wolves not being considered by many as serious players in the LeBron James sweepstakes, Krawczynski stated:
“Could he be telling the absolute truth? Yes, he could be. Could this all be theatre? Yes, it could be. So we see, because we continue to wait for LeBron… But I think that certainly did open some people’s eyes and get some people thinking about the Wolves’ pursuit of LeBron.”
“Anthony Edwards has been directly involved with LeBron in this process. He’s made phone calls to LeBron. LaMelo Ball has had a conversation with LeBron, as I understand it, as they try to get their team considered with the whole sweepstakes here.”
Krawczynski touched on reports about LeBron James’ decision and how the superstar has had the opportunity to examine each team’s case and pick what is best for him. Although the recent recruitment efforts are notable, it is clear that James already has all the information he needs. Hence, it is just a matter of time now.
There have been conclusive updates regarding a timeline, but some sources suggest that James may have delayed his decision due to irritation with Adam Silver’s remark. While this may have been bothersome for fans and analysts, it could be a ray of hope for teams like the Timberwolves.
Can The Timberwolves Still Land LeBron James?
When the initial news of LeBron James’ decision to part with the Los Angeles Lakers broke, several teams came forward as suitors for the superstar. In that light, the Minnesota Timberwolves could even be viewed as one of the first teams to show an interest in signing James in free agency.
Unfortunately, the Timberwolves have gradually fallen out of favor as a potential landing spot. With teams such as the Miami Heat, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Cleveland Cavalierspresenting a more appealing case, Minnesota’s chances have been significantly reduced.
But are they completely out of the race?
Not exactly. Like many teams, the Wolves also have the potential to be contenders. Aside from Anthony Edwards, who is considered one of the league’s best young players, Minnesota boasts phenomenal young talent, including players like LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels, and Ayo Dosunmu. Given that they also have an extremely reliable rim protector in Rudy Gobert anchoring the defense, the team is primed to compensate for James’ defensive lapses (if needed).
LeBron James’ versatility allows him to be effective regardless of context. Hence, even from a fit perspective, the Timberwolves are solid. Unfortunately, some other factors may not be as appealing.
Several reports have indicated that James’ family, especially his daughter, Zhuri, will be a crucial factor in his final decision. Given how far Minnesota is from Los Angeles and his lack of connection to the city, James may not see much appeal in joining them.
When also factoring in how important golf could be from a happiness index, it is safe to say that cities like Miami and San Francisco have a lot more to offer than Minneapolis. Hence, even though LaMelo Ball’s effort to support Anthony Edwards is noteworthy, it seems more likely that LeBron James will take his talents elsewhere.
