Former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is projected to win the Republican primary for Rep. Andy Biggs’s (R) seat in Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
Lamb, who previously ran for Senate and lost to Republican Kari Lake in the 2024 GOP primary, secured President Trump’s endorsement in addition to support from the conservative Club for Growth PAC and Turning Point Action. He defeated home construction businessman Daniel Keenan in Tuesday’s primary.
Lamb’s win in the reliably Republican-leaning district — which includes Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert — puts him on track to replace Biggs this fall. His victory also comes amid scrutiny over a reported sex scandal.
The Arizona Republic reported in May that the former sheriff sent sexually explicit messages to multiple women and in some cases threatened to retaliate against them if they reported or publicized the communications. Lamb’s campaign and legal team has refuted the allegations.
“The campaign is aware that various false, misleading, and potentially defamatory allegations have circulated online for years,” former Arizona Supreme Court Justice and now private attorney Andrew Gould told The Republic in an April 18 letter. “They are repeated without verification and often to only cause great reputational and political harm.”
However, Keenan has made Lamb’s alleged sexual impropriety an issue on the campaign trail, going as far as to suggest the seat could flip blue if Republicans nominated Lamb.
“This primary isn’t just about who can win in July. It’s about who can hold the seat in November,” Keenan said in a video posted on the social platform X earlier this month. “Democrats will spend millions highlighting every controversy they can find on Mark Lamb, and if our nominee comes into the general election with significant baggage similar to Graham Platner, we risk turning what should be a Republican hold into a competitive race.”
Three Democrats jockeyed for the party’s nod Tuesday: nonprofit CEO Christ James, veteran Brian Hualde and nurse Elizabeth Lee.
