Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen (R), who complied with a federal grand jury subpoena and gave the FBI records pertaining to the 2020 elections in March, is projected to win the Republican nomination to take on Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) in November, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Petersen, who’s served as the top Senate Republican since 2023, defeated Rodney Glassman, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps Reserve and an attorney, in the GOP contest for Arizona attorney general.
The Arizona Senate president secured endorsements from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), running for governor, several Republican attorneys general in other states and the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police.
Petersen was involved in the Arizona Senate’s independent audit of the 2020 state election results conducted by independent firm Cyber Ninjas, which confirmed former President Biden’s victory in Maricopa County that election cycle— a move made as President Trump falsely claimed he won the state and others in 2020.
Mayes ahead of the primary has criticized Petersen for his claims about the 2020 election, saying Petersen “should stop lying about our elections and Republicans running for office must denounce his dangerous rhetoric.”
In March, the Arizona Senate president said he turned over 2020 election records to the FBI as the Justice Department investigates unsubstantiated claims of fraud.
During a GOP debate in May, Glassman, a former Democrat-turned-Republican, suggested that officials hadn’t done enough to investigate the purported fraud that took place in 2020 but did acknowledge that Biden won the election, according to KTAR.
Multiple audits and investigations have confirmed Biden’s victory in 2020.
