Dallas Cowboys fans have a lot of reason to be excited for the upcoming NFL season. The team showed a lot of promise in 2025, with Dak Prescott remaining healthy and playing all 17 regular-season games. Its 7-9-1 record may be underwhelming, but it retooled this offseason with key signings and draft selections, particularly Caleb Downs.
The Cowboys selected the former Ohio State Buckeyes star at No. 11 overall to boost their secondary. Safety was one of the positions they had to address entering the draft, and Jerry Jones and Co. hit the jackpot with the two-time unanimous All-American.
Downs played a key role for Ohio State in its run to the national championship in 2024. He also earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, the Jim Thorpe Award and the Lott Trophy last year.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Praises Caleb Downs
Prescott had nothing but kind words to say about Downs. He discussed how the incoming rookie performed during minicamp and OTAs, stressing that he has been the ideal first-year player.
“All the great things he’s done, the way that he approaches the game, his mentality and all of that, it’s what you want,” Prescott said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about putting on the pads and go making plays. But we couldn’t have asked for a better rookie, a man to step in. And understand really just the responsibility that’s kind of not necessarily on his shoulders, but that a new defense is trying to great and trying to create an identity, and how much of a big part he’s going to play in it.
“He’s just done everything right. It makes me think back to my rookie year, and it’s more of just about keeping your mouth quiet and earning respect from the other people and just making sure you’re doing the right things, and Caleb has done all of that and plus. That’s why we’ve been so welcoming, he makes it easy to welcome, but we’re super excited for the fall and watch him make plays and get the ball back to me.”
The star quarterback’s comments say a lot about Downs’ character and work ethic. While a lot is expected from him, he will have his veteran teammates’ support, which will help bring out the best in him.
