There are rumours of a potential reunion of Deebo Samuel with the San Francisco 49ers team; but not everybody seems to believe that idea. Whereas LeSean McCoy thinks that the 49ers missed out on the energy and the spark that Samuel provided, Emmanuel Acho finds no reason at all to bring Samuel back.

In Acho’s opinion, bringing back Samuel will only mean squandering the development of younger players when Samuel has not been productive in recent seasons.

Emmanuel Acho Says The San Francisco 49ers Should Prioritize Ricky Pearsall Over Deebo Samuel

During a discussion on Speakeasy, McCoy suggested that the 49ers lacked the emotional edge Samuel once provided during his time in San Francisco. Acho quickly pushed back, insisting that production, not personality, should drive roster decisions.

“I’m not gonna pay a glorified mascot top tier money… If you a hype man, I’m not paying you to be a hype man. I’m paying you to get 1,400 yards. Deebo had 700 last year and he had 670 the year before. The year before that he had 890. At the end of the day Deebo has had 1-1,000 yard receiving season. ONE! JUST ONE! And y’all are telling me we should go ‘Let’s make Ricky Pearsall, who we drafted in the first round, let’s just send him to the number 3 WR position’. No, I don’t want to do that.”

Such comments emerge amidst continued speculations about Samuel’s future following his time with the Washington Commanders. Even as he remains one of the most versatile options for any team due to his receiving ability, his statistics have been significantly underwhelming compared to his impressive 2021 season where he was an All-Pro.

On the other hand, the 49ers have been actively working on building their receiver group during the last two offseasons. Ricky Pearsall heads into another crucial year in the Kyle Shanahan offense.

Bringing Samuel back could complicate those plans by taking snaps away from younger players the organization wants to evaluate. McCoy’s argument centered on the intensity, physicality and emotional lift which he believed Samuel consistently brought to the 49ers.
