Kate Middleton is opening up about the unexpected hobby she relied on during her cancer treatment. The Princess of Wales revealed her diagnosis in 2024 and that she would be undergoing chemotherapy. She announced that she was in remission one year later.

While visiting the cancer center The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, England, this past June, Kate spoke with patients about how chemotherapy affected her ability to enjoy activities like reading. In a video from her visit shared on social media, the princess said that she surprisingly spent a lot of time coloring to keep her mind occupied.

“I don’t know about you, but I didn’t have the ability to read or really focus on anything,” Kate explained. “[Coloring] was my way of exploring interesting things and being able to do something that did not require an end product, or an end finished piece.”

Kate added that coloring is “just a way of playing and losing yourself.”

Her husband, Prince William, has previously confirmed that Kate enjoys adult coloring books. Back in 2016, Scottish illustrator Johanna Basford made the admission after William presented her with an OBE for her services to art and entrepreneurship. Basford is the author of several bestselling adult coloring books, including 2013’s Secret Garden.

“Prince William actually said that his wife likes to color in Secret Garden, which was really sweet,” Basford said at the time.

During her visit to The Christie in June, Kate shared an emotional moment with one patient, 30-year-old Claire Lorente, who was undergoing her final day of treatment for breast cancer at the clinic.

“Well done! What a journey,” the princess said as she embraced Lorente. “Well done. I know it’s just as hard for family and loved ones,” Kate told Lorente’s partner, whom she also hugged.

Kate then watched as Lorente rang a bell, signifying the end of her cancer treatments. The Princess of Wales applauded, telling her that “this is your day.”
