Julie Andrews will be flying onto people’s screens once again next year. The global icon is set to release a documentary on Disney+ about her life, and she is ready to open up like never before.
An official title and release date have not yet been announced, but the documentary will drop globally in 2027 from acclaimed director and producer R.J. Cutler (Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry, Martha), according to a press release. The documentary will offer an “intimate and revealing look at Andrews’ extraordinary journey, from her early days in British vaudeville to her meteoric rise as a global superstar.”
It is set to feature never-before-seen archival footage and candid interviews about stories that go far beyond the spotlight. Her stories were marked by resilience, heartbreak, reinvention, and enduring grace.
“Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer,” Cutler said in a press release. “She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience, and grace. Most people don’t know the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life, all of which we delve into in this film.”
“To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives, was an experience I will forever cherish. She gave us her full self, without armor, without pretense. And what we found was someone even more extraordinary than the icon. I am humbled by her talent, in awe of her strength, and honored by her trust,” he went on.
Cutler also serves as the producer alongside Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler, and Jonathan Ruane. Mark Blatty joins as the executive producer. The documentary is being produced by This Machine, a division of Sony Pictures Television.
At 90 years old, Andrews’ career has spanned decades, starting in the entertainment industry at 12 years old. Some of her best-known films are Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, the Shrek franchise, The Princess Diaries and its sequel, as well as voiceover work for Bridgerton, among many other roles in film and television.
She has also starred on Broadway and the West End in musicals such as Doctor Dolittle, Camelot, My Fair Lady, and more. To add to Andrews’ ever-growing list of accomplishments, she has put out numerous albums, including Christmas albums, Broadway compilations, and original work.
The Disney legend has also released numerous books, including memoirs and children’s books. Andrews has won an Academy Award, a BAFTA, numerous Emmys and Golden Globe Awards, as well as Grammys and Miscellaneous and Honorary awards.
