John Cena stars in *Matchbox The Movie*, an action adventure inspired by Mattel's iconic toy brand. Here's the release date, cast, plot, and how to watch on Apple TV.

John Cena is bringing one of Mattel's most recognizable toy brands to the screen in "Matchbox The Movie," a globe-trotting action adventure headed to Apple TV this fall.

Apple has confirmed that the film will premiere globally on Friday, October 9, 2026. No theatrical release has been announced, meaning viewers can currently expect to watch it through Apple's streaming service.

Cena stars as Sean, an undercover CIA agent who unexpectedly reunites with a group of childhood friends. According to Apple's official synopsis, Sean returns to their small town after a long absence and inadvertently pulls the group into a frantic international pursuit to save the world.

The premise transforms the Matchbox toy-car brand into a large-scale espionage adventure rather than a conventional children's movie. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave, whose credits include Netflix's "Extraction" and "Extraction 2," suggesting that vehicle chases, stunt work and elaborate action sequences will play a major role.

Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro star alongside Cena as the central group of longtime friends. The ensemble also includes Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani.

David Coggeshall, who previously wrote the Apple action comedy "The Family Plan," wrote the screenplay. Hargrave also serves as an executive producer.

"Matchbox The Movie" is an Apple Original Film produced by Skydance Media and Mattel Films. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger produce for Skydance, while Robbie Brenner and Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz produce through Mattel Films. Jules Daly is also a producer, with Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin serving as executive producers.

The movie forms part of Mattel's broader effort to adapt its toy brands for film audiences following the blockbuster success of "Barbie." The company has developed projects based on several properties, including Hot Wheels, Barney and Polly Pocket, although those titles have not been presented as one interconnected cinematic universe.

Apple released the first official images from "Matchbox The Movie" in February. The photos offered an early look at Cena's character and the film's ensemble but stopped short of revealing many details about the international mission at the center of the story.

A full trailer has not yet been released. More footage and promotional material are likely to arrive as the October premiere approaches.

"Matchbox The Movie" premieres globally on Apple TV on October 9, 2026. An Apple TV subscription will be required to stream it.
