Joey Logano had a fresh take on the new superspeedway rules package announced by NASCAR last week. The changes excite him, but it’s the lack of practice beforehand that has him fired up about the racing product for the fans.
The new rules package will be on display at the Coke Zero 400, the second Daytona date of the Cup Series season, on August 29th. The notable changes include reducing the spoiler and horsepower.
“The rear spoiler will be shortened from 7 inches to 4 inches, the same height as intermediate tracks, in an effort to reduce drag, along with a slight reduction in horsepower from 510 to 465 to adjust for the reduced downforce,” wrote Zach Sturniolo on NASCAR.com. “NASCAR officials anticipate single-car runs to be approximately 3 mph faster than the current package, but cars in a pack are expected to run about the same speeds.”
Logano is excited about the unknown
“I’m sure it’ll look a little bit more like the old Daytona from years and years ago before they repaved it,” said Logano on DBC. “I don’t know if it’ll go that extreme or not, and what it’ll look like, but yeah, there’s a lot of unknowns.
“And how you set the car up and all those things too, on top of it is what are you going to need? It goes back to Atlanta where you sit there, and you go, do you want downforce or do you want to drag out? What’s going to matter the most?
“Well, Atlanta, we’ve been there enough times to at least have a general idea of what we think will be important.
“Well, I don’t know about Daytona.”
Racing’s good when the cars are screwed up
Logano was reminded that there’s no practice before the race to work those things out. The winner of last week’s race at North Wilkesboro is fine with that.
“Yeah. I’m okay with no practice. You know, I mean, I know we just added more practice, but I’m okay with it.
“I enjoy practice. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy working on the car and like trying to find ways to be better and as conversations and all, like, it’s a lot of fun.
“Like I enjoy testing for that reason, but sometimes when cars are all screwed up, the racing’s really good.”
Remember COVID racing and the intro of the Next Gen car
Logano pointed out the COVID season of racing and the introduction of the Next Gen car to prove his point. The racing is the best when teams don’t know.
“I mean, COVID racing was pretty good. You know, we just show and go. The cars in the first run of the race were all over. Cars were passing left and right.
“Think about when the Next Gen car first came out, the racing, everyone was like, ‘Oh, the Next Gen car is great racing. Everyone was praising the heck out of it.
“And nobody knew what the heck they were doing. Like everyone was lost. So again, we’re changing the rules for the superspeedway.
“Great. Now nobody knows what they need. Everyone’s a little bit lost. And the racing will probably be pretty entertaining because nobody knows what to do.
“That’s usually when the racing is the best is when everyone’s lost. It’s once everyone has a science down [that the racing suffers].
