Jay Leno has gone on record multiple times claiming he actually drives his cars, including the rare Ford Mustang GTD that Ford’s CEO Jim Farley delivered to him.
As one of roughly 1,000 lucky owners, Leno was recently spotted at the wheel of his GTD at a car meet.
The GTD isn’t as brittle as some of the other cars in his collection, but it’s still incredibly rare.
Ford marketed it as the most powerful Mustang ever made – it’s also the most expensive.
Jay Leno is an unusual collector
There are two main reasons why Jay Leno isn’t your typical collector.
The first reason has to do with the fact he’s probably the only high-profile collector in the world who doesn’t own a Ferrari.
That’s almost unheard of, like a watch collector who doesn’t own a Rolex or a real estate mogul who doesn’t own anything in Florida, New York, or California.
The second reason is that he actually drives his cars.
A while back, he revealed that he generally drives nearly all of his cars on a regular basis, including the ultra-rare and expensive ones like his McLaren F1.
The GTD is one of the rarest Mustangs ever made
Ford can do a bit of everything.
They make best-selling trucks and pony cars, but they also sell limited-edition rarities.
The Mustang per se isn’t rare, but the GTD is.
Sold as the ‘most powerful Mustang’ ever made, the GTD is an invite-only car, and presumably Leno was one of the first people who Ford called when they allocated the 600+ they built so far.
Interesting, there’s no hard cap on production, but rumor has it Ford wants to limit the Mustang GTD to 1,400-1,700 units.
So far, they’ve built around 600, including the one you see here – chassis number 12 – which was delivered to Jay Leno by the company’s CEO Jim Farley himself as we got to see in a video posted by Leno on his YouTube channel.
And Leno is always ready to put his money where his mouth is: he says he drives his cars daily, and he goes on to show it by showing up at a car meet at the wheel of his Ford Mustang GTD.
