The 2027 recruiting class is loaded with talented point guards. Five of the top 12 ranked players in the cycle are considered point guards. Kentucky has offered all of them, including five-star talent Reese Alston, who appears to be sitting near the top of the coaching staff’s high school Big Board as the summer rolls along.
But there are a couple of other talented 2027 point guards with Kentucky offers, as well. Chase Lumpkin (No. 29 overall in the Rivals Industry Ranking), who KSR spoke with at Peach Jam about his recruitment, is one of them. The other is 6-foot-1 floor general Jaxson Davis, who announced his offer from UK right before the NBPA Top 100 Camp back in early June.
Like Lumpkin, Davis was also at the Nike Peach Jam last week in North Augusta, SC, where he was able to update KSR on his recruitment. Unfortunately, he injured his MCL early in the event. Davis got hurt in his first game of the week with MeanStreets. And while he tried to play through the pain for two more games, he ultimately shut himself down to prevent further issues. Davis averaged 9.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 4.3 rebounds before sitting out the rest of Peach Jam.
That injury prevented Kentucky assistant coach Mo Williams, who offered Davis and has been his main contact with the program, from watching him in action.
“(Williams) called me while I was at a buddy’s grad party and he just said I’ve been playing really well and I deserve to be at Kentucky,” Davis told KSR. “He really believed in me. He’s a really real guy. He kept it real, you could tell right away. He’s not gonna sugarcoat anything with you.”
Williams was actually in the gym to see Davis in action on the first day of the live period at Peach Jam last Thursday, but left once he learned of Davis’ injury. Talks between the two sides haven’t died off completely, but the communication level hasn’t been as consistent since the offer came in over a month ago.
“A little bit here and there,” Davis said when asked how often he hears from Kentucky. “I know they’ve been at some games and stuff like that, but it’s been a little slow.”
Along with Alston (No. 7 overall in 2027) and Lumpkin, Kentucky is also recruiting Beckham Black (No. 3), Nasir Anderson (No. 6), Cayden Daughtry (No. 9), and NaVorro Bowman Jr. (No. 12). The staff is casting a wide net at the point guard position for the 2027-28 season. Davis seems to realize that.
“It’s been on and off (with Kentucky),” he added. “They’re recruiting a lot of other guards and they’re worrying about what they have right now (on the roster). We’ll see how it ends up.”
Davis and Kentucky coaches have previously discussed getting him to Lexington for a visit, but talks would need to ramp back up to make that happen. In the meantime, Davis is hearing the most from Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, Michigan State, Ohio State, Creighton, and Marquette. Virginia is also poking around. He has an official visit with Iowa beginning Sept. 19. In total, he plans to take between 6-8 OVs in the coming months with a decision potentially popping in October.
“I live in Big Ten country,” Davis said. “I live in Illinois. It’s where I’m from and the region I’m from, but I feel like I can play any playstyle. Big Ten, Big East, anywhere I go.”
Davis doesn’t intend to drag out his recruitment. More visits will be scheduled soon. Whether or not a trip to Kentucky ends up being one of them will be telling.
