Jerry O’Connell is looking back on his breakup from Giuliana Rancic.

During the TV personality’s appearance on the Monday, July 20, episode of the Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, O’Connell, 52, spoke about some of his previous relationships, including when he briefly dated the entertainment reporter, 51, before marrying wife Rebecca Romijn.

Admitting that the breakup ended “poorly,” O’Connell confessed: “I was a pretty terrible boyfriend.” He then apologized to Rancic and other girlfriends for his less-than-stellar behavior in his younger years.

“We had a lot of fun together,” he said of his time with Rancic, before noting that she didn’t run what she wrote about him in her 2015 memoir, Going Off Script, by him before it was published.

In Going Off Script, Rancic discussed their tumultuous split and claimed that O’Connell ended things with her via an intercom at his condominium.

In her memoir, according to Ripa, Rancic wrote that O’Connell had “as much emotion as the customer service representative who tells you your bags missed the flight” when it came to the end of their relationship.

“That is a great line,” O’Connell told Ripa on the podcast, adding that Rancic is a very “smart girl.”

In the book, per Ripa, Rancic claimed her then-boyfriend told her via the intercom system, “Nope, sorry, homegirl. Things change, but you take care, OK?”

When pressed by host Kelly Ripa if that’s how the split actually went down, O’Connell prefaced, “I’ve never spoken about this story.”

“I broke up with her through an intercom because Giuliana Rancic came to my condominium…and hit the intercom,” he explained. “I was not expecting Giuliana Rancic to come to said condominium.”

O’Connell, who said he had “someone” else inside, claimed Rancic “wanted entry into my condominium” but didn’t give him any notice that she was dropping by.

“Thank goodness [there was a] buzzer, gate, security,” O’Connell said. “I mean, I paid a pretty hefty homeowners’ fee for these things — cameras and everything — and I said, ‘I did not know you were coming. You can’t come up here. You can’t come here unannounced.'”

Still, Ripa wanted clarity on what exactly O’Connell said via the intercom. “I don’t recall exact wording,” he said. “So I can’t deny that I said that. It doesn’t sound like something I would say, but again, if I was writing a memoir, it made for a good quote.”

“So you know what,” he concluded, “I’m going to applaud Giuliana for using colorful dialogue and everything.”

O’Connell — who would not reveal who he had in his condo at the time of Rancic’s surprise visit — also notably dated Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell before he married Romijn  in 2007.
