According to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice newsletter, Vance suggested naming the couple’s fourth child “Donald” as the “ultimate tribute” to President Donald Trump. But, it was not meant to be as the couple instead announced the birth of Alec Neel Vance, a little boy born while Vance serves as vice president.
A Washington insider claimed that Vance believed the name would be “a meaningful gesture,” telling the outlet: “JD floated the idea of naming the baby Donald. He thought it would be the ultimate tribute to President Trump. JD knows the President appreciates loyalty.”
But apparently, Usha Vance wasn’t convinced.
“She shut it down — politely, but firmly,” another source said. “Usha wanted their son’s name to reflect their family, not make a political statement. She wasn’t about to turn her newborn into a headline before he could even walk.”
It must be noted that not JD or Usha Vance have even talked about why they called their newborn Alec, and they have only made one public announcement to date .
The couple announced Alec Neel Vance’s birth in a joint social media statement on Sunday, writing that both mother and baby were healthy while their three older children were “overjoyed” to welcome their new brother.
The birth of the youngest Vance child made history because Alec is the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years. Vance previously said he would not take formal paternity leave because of the demands of his office, though he planned to spend more time at home and bring his children into parts of his work schedule when possible.
He did however joke around after Karoline Leavitt was on maternity leave and he had to take on her press duties for a bit, saying that she could take on his role when his son was born.
“I told Karoline I would stand in for her today for the White House press briefing on the condition that when Usha has our baby in July that she would be vice president for a couple of weeks,” he said.
President Trump congratulated the family following the announcement and later shared a photo of Alec with his siblings, calling him “a perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family.” It wasn’t long before Hunter Biden also weighed in after the new baby was born, trolling the vice president with an ice cream photo.
The Vances have been leasing part of a property in rural northern Virginia to give their children some privacy away from Washington. Usha has been very open about the challenges of raising children in public life, saying she and her husband try to avoid putting them in situations that might later embarrass them. And that may very well include keeping names personal and not political.
